By the 1880s, New Zealand had developed its own hardy, high-quality strain of merino sheep, adapted to the mountainous high country. Today, New Zealand is home to some of the world’s leading merino wool companies, including Icebreaker, Mons Royale, Devold and Allbirds. These brands have proven what locals have known for over a century: merino wool is one of the best natural materials for active outdoor use, and that includes motorcycling.

Merino wool’s structure is engineered to handle extremes. Its crimped fibres trap warm air when it’s cold, while the breathable weave allows excess heat and moisture to escape when riding in warmer conditions.
